Bike & Boat Tours in Europe Cycle by day, sleep on the river at night — no hotel check-ins, no luggage stress
Bike and boat holidays combine the best of cycling and river cruising. You cycle along the riverbank during the day, then return each evening to your floating hotel — which has followed the same route carrying everything you need. No packing and unpacking. No hotel check-ins. Just cycling and rivers. 29 tours available.
How Bike & Boat Holidays Work
The concept is simple: a river boat sails from point A to point B over 7–14 days. Every morning you disembark with your bike and cycle along the riverbank. The boat follows the same route by water. In the evening — or at any point during the day — you rejoin the boat at the next harbour. Your cabin, your meals, and all your belongings are on board.
The key advantage over standard cycling holidays is flexibility. On a difficult day, you cycle less and spend more time on the sundeck. On a good day, you cycle further and meet the boat at the next stop. There's no right or wrong amount — which makes this format ideal for mixed-ability groups and anyone who wants the option to rest without falling behind.
Why Choose Bike & Boat?
One check-in on day one. No packing every morning, no finding new hotels, no wondering if the next place will be good. Your cabin is your home for the week.
Everything stays on the boat. You cycle with just a small day pack — water, sunscreen, camera. The lightest possible way to travel.
Cycle 20 km or 80 km — your choice, every day. Bad weather? Stay on board. Feeling strong? Go further and the boat will find you.
Breakfast, lunch, and dinner on board. This is a significant part of the value — no hunting for restaurants after a long day on the bike.
Boats typically carry 20–40 guests. Evenings on the sundeck with fellow cyclists creates a unique shared holiday atmosphere.
See the landscape from the saddle and from the water. River cruising shows you a completely different perspective of the same route.
Best Bike & Boat Routes in Europe
Danube — Passau to Budapest
Europe's most popular bike and boat destination. Wide, navigable, lined with cycling paths — Wachau Valley, Vienna, Bratislava, and the Pannonian plains. The gold standard.
Canal du Midi (France)
The UNESCO Canal du Midi is made for bike and boat. The flat towpath runs the entire way — you cycle and the boat follows through tunnels of ancient plane trees from Toulouse to the sea.
Rhine — Netherlands to Germany
Windmills, medieval castle-topped hills, and excellent cycling infrastructure. The Rhine from Amsterdam south through Germany is one of Europe's great river journeys.
Elbe — Prague Region to Hamburg
Less common than the Danube but very rewarding — scenic Bohemian canyon section combined with flat north German countryside. A great choice for those who've already done the Danube.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a bike and boat holiday?
A bike and boat holiday combines cycling with a river cruise. You cycle along the riverbank during the day; in the evening you return to the boat which serves as your floating hotel. The boat carries your luggage and follows the same route. One check-in, no hotel logistics, flexible daily distances.
How much cycling do you do on a bike and boat holiday?
Typically 30–60 km per day, but it's flexible. You can cycle as much or as little as you want each day — if you'd rather stay on the boat, that's fine. Most guests cycle 3–5 hours per day and spend time on deck in between.
Are bike and boat holidays suitable for beginners?
Yes — they're ideal for beginners. Flexible daily distances mean you set your own pace. If you're tired or the weather is bad, stay on the boat. Most routes follow flat riverside paths. E-bikes are available on most departures.
