The castle was founded in the late 13th century by the Bishop of Prague, Tobias of Benesov. Franz Ferdinand of Austria Este, a Habsburg archduke, chose Konopiste for his primary residence. The St. George collection and 300.000 hunting trophies are also remarkable.
